Our Research Agenda

Da Vinci's Viola Organista

Our research focuses on developing appropriate models, computational methodologies, mathematics, and software to address computational problems arising in statistics, data science, and artificial intelligence. We specialize in problems that involve uncertainty that is inherent to the problem or is introduced into the problem for some (computational) benefit.

Owing to our specialization, we often do research in two mathematical disciplines where uncertainty and computing intersect: randomized linear algebra and stochastic optimization. Still, as we are driven by real problems, we are always willing to do research in more traditional disciplines and adjacent inter-disciplinary areas.

Our past and active efforts—including a list of publications—are described in the menu above. to the left. We encourage you to explore these options to see what we have been working on. You can also find a full list of our work on google scholar.

The image displayed above to the left is a Geigenwerk. It is a realization of an incomplete concept drawing of a viola organista by Leonardo da Vinci. For me, it is a reminder that the final product and my initial vision can often deviate substantially, but the end result may still be useful.
